Jack
Havener plays the saxophone, clarinet and flute. He was born
in Dixon Tennessee and moved to Terre Haute, Indiana as a
child. He became interested in Music when his siblings became
interested. He started playing the saxophone as a sophomore
in high school. He went to Indiana State.
Jack graduated
from the Julliard School of Music
in New York City in 1948 and was the first saxophone major
to graduate. Columbia University was just up the street. He
graduated two years later with a major in music education.
Dwight Eisenhower signed his degree from Columbia University.
He conducted three Broadway musicals and orchestrated music
for many acts that worked on the Ed Sullivan Show and the
Jack Parr Show. He orchestrated music for CBS
for the TV show "Car 54 Where Are You." He composed
incidental music for a Broadway play
called "The Warm Peninsula," starring Julia Harris
and Larry Hagman.
Jack worked
with several bands in New York City; Vincent Lopez at the
Taft Hotel, Nat Brandwin at the Waldorf Astoria, and Milt
Show at the Plaza Hotel. Jack says, "Music has been
my only occupation all my life." Now his claim to
fame is playing for Chicago's own Burgie Crandall and the
16 piece "Let's Dance Band."
